1) creating a blog was not nearly as hard as I thought
2) there are others like me, trying to link PE and Tech
3) I can take this blog thing a lot further.
Is it reasonable to create a blog as a means to communicate and update students and parents about their (my) school's athletics?
Being the Athletic Director of my school, it is my responsibility to create a Newsletter, which is emailed to parents every two weeks (i.e.-doing things differently). Could this be done by blog instead? Pictures/videos/podcasts could be added, match reports updated, announcements and notices posted. Students could provide the majority of the information, and myself acting as Editor, would make sure all info to be posted was factually correct. In fact, student ownership of this blog could be powerful for them, liberating for me (No Newsletter!).
But how do you get the wheels of change in motion?
Your idea to use a blog as a school news letter is pretty close to the example given in our text about using a blog as a building block for a school web site (Richardson, 2010) Must be it's a good idea!
ReplyDeleteI really like the suggestion of using blogs for clubs(Richardson, 2010), particularly those that tend to be overshadowed by the varsity sports programs. It sounds like a great way to get the members together more often than occasional meetings to share ideas, and create more exposure for their activities.
Hey Tracy,
ReplyDeleteI guess this idea just seems like such a no brainer, why don't most schools do it? I don't have the power to incorporate the entire school, but cold make a difference with my department.
Hi Josh
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like an excellent idea. Of course, I think you would still have to moderate what the students post in the blog, and I think you might have to teach parents how to check the blog. We have had issues in the last year just getting parents to check the website, but maybe that is because they do not know when it has been updated. Of course, the RSS feed woudl take care of that problem. So many tools, so little time at the back to school night!
Regards,
Lisa
Wow, Josh! I am so impressed with your Blog! You have done so much with it already! I think your idea to use a Blog as a way of communication is great. Have you every considered using social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.)? My school recently got a Facebook page and puts a ton of parental information on there. Not all parents are on Facebook but I think it is a great resource for those parents that are!
ReplyDeleteGood luck!
Thanks Stacy! I have to admit, I have been having a lot of fun playing around with it. I am living in China right now, so unfortunately, all social media is blocked! I am even going to have a hard time trying to find a blog space that isn't blocked too. Any recommendations?
DeleteHi Josh
ReplyDeleteOne of has to make a wiki for next week's assignment. I have made a (not very good) one which I would like to invite you to join. Please can you send my your email (you can do it on the walden site if you like so it isn't "out there") so I can invite you.
Best,
Lisa
Hey Lisa,
DeleteI sent you my email via Week 2 discussion board. Thanks for getting this going!
